Papercrete And Me

Use recycled paper to build an energy efficient papercrete house.

Papercrete Building: Judith’s Next Project

On July 4 of this year, 2009, I received an email from a member of the Yahoo Papercreters group suggesting a gathering for members of the group and others who had an interest in papercrete. We would get together at my place and share our knowledge and experience and have an opportunity to meet face to face after so many months of corresponding online.

I thought it was a great idea but I wanted it understood that I would not be involved in the business end of things. I would provide the place to camp, the project and all materials and the food.  As we continued to communicate by email things gradually took shape.

Ev, the person who had originated the idea gladly took care of writing the invitations, answering questions, enrolling participants and accepting the money we would need to buy the food.

Ev did her job superbly.  I, on the other hand decided to take an  impromptu trip back east to see my kids just a few weeks prior to the gathering.  I had not decided on a project and had not begun to plan the meals or do any shopping. So I arrived home from my wonderful trip with just 3 weeks to prepare everything.

Menus came about easily. We had one participant who doesn’t eat “anything with a face or a mama” but other than that everyone would eat anything as long as it was in the food category.

The project though was more difficult to determine. I am living at a nice place now in the position of caretaker. I thought it would be a good idea to put up a small storage building to replace the old junky trailer that I thought we had found a buyer for. As it turned out the deal feel through so I moved the stuff back into the trailer and the pressure for a new storage area was off.

The more I thought about it the more I was convinced that I didn’t want to invest my time, energy, and materials into a building on someone else’s property.

So I kept on thinking and finally decided to put up a small building on a piece of land I didn’t actually own yet but would be mine within a couple of months. The concept of my 12 X 16 “storage shed” was born.

Who makes a house out of paper? Judith does! I have been working and refining my formula and methods for about 4 years now and do believe papercrete is the best material for building with. It is low cost, uses recycled materials, has a high R value, is easy to make and work with, and really lets your creativity come alive. I am a single 60 year old woman living in the beautiful high desert of northern New Mexico. I love what I'm doing and want to share it with everyone.
